The Stylistics were formed in Philadelphia in 1968, when two local groups, The Percussions and The Monarchs, merged. The original members were Russell Thompkins Jr., Herb Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith, and James Dunn. They signed with Avco Records in 1970 and met Thom Bell, who became their producer and mentor. Bell helped them develop their distinctive sound, which blended sweet soul vocals with lush orchestral arrangements.
The Stylistics had 12 consecutive top ten hits on the Billboard R&B chart from 1971 to 1974, making them one of the most successful soul groups of the decade.
